Before we ring out this year of Gone Girl, Groot and Grumpy Cat, we present a special series dedicated to the list to end all lists. From Franz Kafka a sartorially specific motherf–ker, the country’s theatre scene was awash in outstanding works this year — so much so that no mere Top 10 list could hold every deserving show.

The first-best classical production and Soulpepper’s peak, its finest in this area since the same director, Laszlo Marton, did The Wild Duck. Moliere’s comedy was freshly thought through, stretched without distortion to its farcical and near-tragic limits. In the major roles, Diego Matamoros and Oliver Dennis were major.
